Trends in Kitchen Design

My plan this year is to re-model my kitchen and this has got me doing a lot of research and study on new trends in kitchen design. I realize that the kitchen is the most expensive room to re-model in the house so I have listed some naira saving tips which will leave me with a brand new kitchen when I’m done. I’m obliged to share them with you:

*Decorative: top trend in kitchen design for 2013 is decoration. Gone are the days when kitchens were just kitchens – now they’re so pretty they could be any room in the house. Spice your kitchen up with some picture frames arranged on the walls, place a vase or two of fresh flowers in different positions and arrange the cookware, cutlery and plates in a creative pattern that catches the eye.
*Neutral tones: the kitchen colours trending right now are whites, off-whites and natural wood stains. These colours continue to be what homeowners want in cabinetry. Counter-top tell a similar story as authentic colours and neutrals, particularly warm grays, create an understated look which allows pop of colours to be used in the decorative layer.

*Contrast: For as long as I can remember, my Mum’s kitchen was mostly black and white and amazingly, in 2013, this trend still persists! Contrasts of a lighter colour and a deeper colour has always had appeal. Look for the colours you enjoy and which will further increase the size of your space.
*Bright lights, small kitchen: Not only colour creates excitement, with bold lighting, a small kitchen can look twice its size. This can be achieved by using a fabric shade around your kitchen lights to cast more glow or by the use of a paper lantern which is quite affordable, yet dramatic.
*Wooden floors: this is also a top trend for 2013. If well fitted, it is easy to maintain and keep clean. Without wearing any footwear, it feels warm and solid. It is also not slippery perchance water spills on it and is good to have if you have kids. But on a budget like mine and my time constraints, this requires a lot of budget cuts.
*Glass: the preference for glass topped tables and cabinet doors have grown dramatically over the past three years according to the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA). You can get a refreshing new look for your kitchen by changing the top of your prep table to glass. Glass is stable and does not chip. Also, make some of the cabinet doors see through or stained glass to liven up the room.

Remember, the most important trend is convenience. Appliances should be multifunctional and have convenient features while cabinets should have convenient access and storage. The kitchen should perform effortlessly.
I’m envisaging a schedule of between 4-5 weeks to get all the work done on my kitchen according to my timeline. Wish me luck…
